National Parks and Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2016 Passed


In December 2016, the Parliament of Malawi passed amendments to its Wildlife and National Parks Act, the first in over 20 years, to deter poaching and illegal wildlife trafficking. Specifically, the National Parks and Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2016 makes a distinction between “endangered” and “listed” species, placing “listed species,” like elephants, at an elevated level. Big Shift Campaign Launch in Malawi

PACJA, Christian Aid, CISONECC launched the Big Shift Campaign in Malawi at a two-day meeting in Lilongwe from 23th to 24th January 2017. The campaign is aimed at influence increased investment in renewable energy. The launch happened in conjunction with the launch for the Poor People’s Energy Outlook released by Practical Action.

Students for Climate Justice Workshop

CISONECC, NYNCC and CADECOM Head office joined Trocáire at a Students for Climate Justice Workshop in Zomba from 10 to 12 February, 2017. The workshop was aimed at training Students for Climate Justice Members in Climate Justice Advocacy and the role of the Youth in advocacy. The participants were encouraged to take initiative, create their own space and be active in influencing the change they want to see especially for climate justice. At the end of the three-day workshop, the two clubs developed work plans for the next three months beginning with a debate on urban floods which was held on Saturday, 18th February 2017.


2016 Declared the Hottest Year on Record!

According to NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 2016 was the hottest year in 137 years of record keeping – and the third year in a row to take the number one slot. Globally-averaged temperatures in 2016 were 1.78 degrees Fahrenheit (0.99 degrees Celsius) warmer than the mid-20th century mean. Read more here.
